About This Item
Lisbon, em a Nova Impressão da Viuva Neves e Filhos, 1823.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 8°, stitched. Small ornament on title page. Uncut. Light soiling. Overall in fine condition. 29 pp., (1 blank l.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. A spirited response to the report of the commission appointed to recommend how to implement the Lei da Reforma Regular that was passed in 1823. The anonymous author finds the commissioners' comments despropositos and the law's provisions equally absurd. The points he attacks are: 1) the idea that the government should be able to send any member of any religious order to any monastery, so that (for example) Capuchins, Augustinians, and Carthusians might all be lodged together; 2) the notion that religious houses do not have the means or financial acumen to support themselves; and 3) the complaint of the commissioners that some friars they spoke to were rude to them.Monasteries in Portugal were abolished eleven years later, by D. Pedro.*** Not located in Innocêncio or Fonseca, Pseudónimos. Porbase locates two copies, both at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Not located in Jisc. KVK (51 databases searched) locates only the hard copies cited by Porbase, while reporting links to the digitized version at that at the Oliveira Lima Library.
