About This Item
New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1963. Paperback. Small 8vo. Stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. viii, 372pp. Illustrations, 5maps. Very good. Slightest bit of faint edgewear only, with spine lightly sunned. Tight and nice first softbound edition, handsomely inscribed and signed in blue ballpoint on title page "For Deane Malott / Whose institution has / contributed so much to / the richness of his / country's intellectual life. / With admiration / Walter Sullivan." Sullivan (1918-96), often called the "dean of science writers," was the award-winning "New York Times" science journalist who covered anything scientific for a half century and cranked out science and exploration titles such as this meanwhile. Front pastedown bears elegant bookplate of the recipient, Deane Waldo Malott (1898-1996), a noted academic administrator and educator who served as assistant dean at Harvard Business School (1923-29), chancellor of University of Kansas (1939-51) and president of Cornell University (1951-63). Superb presentation copy.
