A questionnaire leads the hero of this book into an imaginative search for his origins and he gives the history of his Czech town from medieval days thru the Nazi occupation and Soviet rule. When this was originally circulated in typewritten form in Czechoslovakia in 1974, Grusa was imprisoned for "initiating disorder." Translated by Peter Kussi. Illustrated endpapers.
