The author's description of the Quiche conquest of the Guatemala Highlands is based on his analysis of the region's well-preserved Late Post-classic archaeological remains in conjunction with the abundant ethnohistoric documentation of the pre-Hispanic period. In order to assess the degree of Quiche influence on subjugated peoples, he analyzes the settlement remains of each conquered ethnic group before and after Quiche domination. Ethnohistory provides complementary data on such political acts of conquest as military occupation and levies of tribute in goods or services. Fox also infers economic relationships from the information the documents provide on tribute payments and agricultural production. Quiche Conquest is valuable not only as a complete portrait of the settlement system of an archaic state but also as a significant addition to the archaeological record, for it provides the first descriptions and illustrations of many Postclassic site in Highland Guatemala.
