Antverpiae (Antwerp / Antwerpen / Anvers): Prostant apud Philippum Lisaert, auctoris aere & cura, 1612. 2nd Edition . Very Good. 8 x 10.25 inches (20.5 x 26.5 cm). Contemporary vellum binding with yapp fore edge. Inked title to spine. Large stain to rear board. Cracking to front joint but securely bound. Front pastedown endpaper has been replaced. Rear endpaper is creased, pastedown has loss to edges. Creasing and short tears to the fore edge of the front free endpaper, first five leaves, to the rear free endpaper and final four leaves. A little light browning to pages but otherwise clean throughout. Engraved title vignette (portrait of Horace), complete with the 103 full-page copperplate engravings (attributed to Gijsbert van Veen by Nagler and Bryan). Includes Latin quotations from Horace and other writers, followed by verses in Spanish, Dutch, Italian, and French - describing the facing plate. Colophon reads: Typis Dauidis Martinij. A landmark emblem book, originally published in 1607. Van Veen was an accomplished painter who had taught Peter Paul Rubens during the last four years of his apprenticeship. He published two further important emblem volumes: Amorum Emblemata (1608) and Amoris divini emblemata (1615). A scarce early edition. Overall condition is Very Good. First of the Brussels Foppens editions of Veen's enduringly popular "Emblems from Horace" (principally from the Odes and Satires), a classic of emblematic literature. 4to: [8],205,[3]pp, with full-page engraved coat-of-arms, portrait of "Octavio Vaenius," and 103 engraved emblems with mottoes in Latin and stanzas in French below each plate and verses in Latin, Italian, Dutch and French on verso of preceding plate. Contemporary sprinkled calf, very skillfully rebacked, spine in six compartments between raised bands with central printer's ornament in blind, recent blue morocco lettering piece gilt, title page in red and black with portrait medallion. Antwerp: Prostant apud Philippu Lisaert, auctoris aere & curae, 1612. 4to (240 x 192mm). 212pp., [2]. 103 full-page engravings attributed to his brother and artist Gijsbert van Veen (1562-1628). Title with engraved oval portrait of Horace. Contemporary vellum, paneled in blind with raised bands; (title thumb-soiled, worming to lower margins worst at final few quires; modern endpapers, hinges strengthened, upper joint cracked at head and foot, covers slightly bowed). Otto Vaenius was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist flourishing in Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th century. He is known for running a large studio in Antwerp, producing several emblem books, and for being Peter Paul Rubens’s teacher from 1594 to 1598. Horatian emblem books were received with resounding enthusiasm in the early modern period.
