From the blurb: "Der Todestag des Rabanus Maurus, eines der größten mittelalterlichen Gelehrten, jährt sich 2006 zum 1150sten Male. Aus diesem Anlaß leiht die Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rom erstmals eines ihrer wichtigsten Werke, das 'Lob des Heiligen Kreuzes', aus. Diese wertvolle Handschrift, eine Sammlung von Figurengedichten zu Ehren des Kreuzes Christi, schenkte Rabanus um 826 an den Mainzer Dom und korrigierte sie eigenhändig, als er den^Codex 847 nach seiner Erhebung zum Erzbischof von Mainz dort vorfand. Die reich mit Gold, Silber und Purpur ausgestattete Prachthandschrift gelangte im 17. Jahrhundert über prominente Vorbesitzer, darunter Kaiser Rudolf II. und Königin Christina von Schweden, in den Besitz der Päpste. Nach über 300 Jahren verläßt der Codex nun erstmals wieder die Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rom und kehrt an seinen ursprünglichen Bestimmungsort zurück. Erweitert um Originale und Repliken aus dem Bereich von Skulptur und Buchmalerei verfolgt die Ausstellung die Spuren eines großen mittelalterlichen Gelehrten. Zugleich bietet sie für kurze Zeit die einmalige Gelegenheit, eine der eindrucksvollsten Prunkhandschriften der karolingischen Zeit in ihrer originalen Schönheit zu bewundern.
