NY: Knopf, 1960. First Edition . Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. First printing of the author's second novel and fourth book, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The book has some minor soiling at the ends of the spine and edges of the boards. The jacket spine is slightly sunned, and there is a small (1/2") closed tear at the top of the rear panel. The edges and ends of the jacket spine are slightly rubbed. Inscribed by the author: "For Jim, best wishes, John Updike" on the front endpaper. Even with the flaws described, this is an extremely desireable copy of the author's most coveted book. Tight and square, with no names or other markings internally, in a bright first issue dust jacket with the $4.00 price on the front flap.
Synopsis
Rabbit, Run , written by John Updike and first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1960, follows a 26-year-old former high school basketball player nicknamed “Rabbit.” Imprisoned in a tedious job and a loveless marriage, Rabbit attempts to find freedom from his constrained middle-class lifestyle. The novel was republished in a 1963 Penguin Edition, which was the first to include more sexually risque passages cut by Knopf in the first edition. The first of the 'Rabbit Tetralogy', Rabbit, Run is perhaps the most sought-after title written by Updike.
