France, earlier a journalist, became a writer of a range of stories, many characterised by their ironic and sceptical tone. A firm socialist he was also a strong defender of liberal causes such as in the Dreyfus affair. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921 and the following year his entire literary output was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a matter he considered a distinction.
