Complete Title is: "Experiments of Spiritual Life & Health and their Preservatives in which the weakest child of God may get assurance of his spiritual life and blessednesse and the strongest may find proportionable discoveries of his Christian growth and the means of it. By Roger Williams of Providence in New England." The title page is a reproduction from 1652. This 1863 reproduction is faithful to the original with the typeface of the period substituting the letter "F" for "S" and using what is now less conventional spelling. This was a limited edition reprinting of 500 copies. Roger Williams (1603-1683) was a religious reformer, maverick, and perhaps the first supporter of Native American rights. He is also credited as being the first in the American colonies to attempt to prohibit slavery. Williams was one of the…

He was best known for picaresque novels such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751) and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), which influenced later novelists, including Charles Dickens. His novels were liberally altered by contemporary printers; an authoritative edition of each was edited by Dr O. M. Brack Jr and others. Samuel Richardson (baptised 19 August 1689 – 4 July 1761) was an English writer and printer best known for three epistolary novels: Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded (1740), Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady (1748) and The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1753). He printed almost 500 works in his life, including journals and magazines, working periodically with the London bookseller Andrew Millar. Richardson had been apprenticed to a printer, whose daughter he eventually married. He lost her along with five sons, but remarried and had four daughters who reached adulthood, but no male heirs to continue the print shop. Full tan calf with gilt banding, flower emblem and title on the spine. . First EditionOliver Goldsmith (10 November 1728 – 4 April 1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet, who is best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), his pastoral poem The Deserted Village (1770), and his plays The Good-Natur'd Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1771, first performed in 1773). He is thought to have written the classic children's tale The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes (1765). Goldsmith's birth date and year are not known with certainty. According to the Library of Congress authority file, he told a biographer that he was born on 10 November 1728. The location of his birthplace is also uncertain. He was born either in the townland of Pallas, near Ballymahon, County Longford, Ireland, where his father was the Anglican curate of the parish of Forgney, or at the residence of his maternal grandparents, at the Smith Hill House near Elphin in County Roscommon, where his grandfather… Read More
