Kidwell photographic studio, Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas. Sent from Syracuse, Kansas by Robert Popkins to his parents Sept. 20 and to his brother Chas. Aug. 7, both living in Halstead, Kansas. The cards titled No. 1 View of Syracuse and New Steel Bridge, Syracuse, Kans. In the message to his brother Robert describes a 2 1/2 hour trip with his mulke team "down to Syracuse" "had a runaway and then made them travel the rest of the way." He also mentions "it is still windy out here and the dust blows a fright". The one to his parents mentions "stayed all night in Bucklin and came to Dodge this morn. Caught No.9 here will see my Co. Supt. and then catch the 567 to Holly." He ends by saying "tell Everett there is no school in Kiowa Co." Both Very Good, the written sides with some toning. SCARCE. . Postcard. In a music studio, seated at an Ehrbar piano. With an autograph note signed to verso dated Vienna, September 24, 1936, addressed to the Colombian musicologist Otto de Greiff. With Bittner's return address stamp in purple ink to upper left corner, "Julius Bittner, Wien IX, Dietrichsteingasse 10." Very slightly worn. In very good condition overall. "Although Bittner's output embraces orchestral and chamber music, a large-scale Mass and several lieder and choruses, he devoted most of his creative energies towards writing for the stage. His passion for opera was fuelled by attending a performance of Lohengrin at the age of 12, and, following the precedent set by Wagner, he wrote the librettos for 15 of his own operas. Although his early attempts at the genre were not performed publicly, his friendship with the conductor Bruno Walter proved decisive in establishing his reputation, primarily with the opera Der Musikant produced in Vienna in 1910. A limited edition in hardback with no jacket. This is copy number 713 of 1000. Book is Very Good to Near Fine with some wear at spine ends, and with a shallow dimple on the spine near the top. The book was dedicated to Fred Rosenstock who was a well-known book dealer in Denver. He opened his first store in 1922, and in 1962 opened Fred A. Rosenstock Books on East Colfax’s Book Row. He specialized in western history. This was a presentation copy from Rosenstock to a friend, as per written gift inscription on the half title page. Signed by Rosenstock and dated Sept. 5 – 1975. Rosenstck wrote a chapter for this book. He was the subject of a biography written by Donald E. Bower, Foreword by Frank Waters, and published by Northland Press.
