About This Item

The year 1892 was a Presidential election year, and Mr. Henderson chose to present to the House a clearly partisan political speech endorsing the Republican candidate for President, all under the guise of the House's consideration of the "sundry civil bill". "The Real Record" - The Democratic Congress Analyzed - Increased Appropriations, Extravagant Expenditures, Costly and Valueless Investigations - Etc, Etc. - Speech of the Hon. David B. Henderson, of Iowa, in the House of Representatives, Friday, August 5, 1892 goes through a multitude of financial and societal positions adopted by the Democrats before reaching his expected conclusion, appearing on page 20 of the text, of endorsing the Republican candidate.

This First Edition copy of the speech is contained in a 22 page booklet, without covers, that measures approximately 5 ¾ x 9 inches. The pages are slightly tanned, but the text is clear and easily read. There is a stamp on the front cover related to the prior ownership of the booklet by the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio. The overall condition of the item is good.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the title page of the booklet, the first page of the speech, and page 20 of the booklet.

David Bremner Henderson (March 14, 1840 – February 25, 1906), a ten-term Republican Congressman from Dubuque, Iowa, was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1899 to 1903. He was the first Congressman from west of the Mississippi River and the last Civil War veteran. [Wikipedia]
