About This Item

Grosset & Dunlap, New York [c.1910]. Book. Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). An early undated reprint, issued here by Grosset & Dunlap (the original first edition was published by Houghton, Mifflin in 1903). This copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Muriel Clennell. The author of the book gladly adds her name to that of the giver, Kate Douglas Wiggin, 1911", beneath which is the signature of a second person, "Auntie Flossie" - presumably 'the giver' in question. 8vo. 327pp. Green cloth, lettered and ruled in black at the backstrip with two decorations, and with a black-stamped order and decorated paper label pasted to the upper board. The top edge dust marked, and with a touch of rubbing to several extremities. The cloth lightly marked and dust soiled, with some fading to the decorations. Edges and free endpapers very slightly spotted, and with short place-marker creases to the tips of several leaves, and a little soiling and finger blemishing to occasional margins. A nice bright copy, considerably enhanced by the author's inscription. No dust wrapper. The binding of this Grosset & Dunlap issue is essentially identical to that of the first edition, with the exception of the differing imprint information at the base of the backstrip. There is no date on the title page, and the reverse of the title page shows the following text "Copyright 1903 by Kate Douglas Riggs. All Rights Registered. Published October 1903". The actual publication date was probably circa 1910. The text incorporates the two minor alterations from the original first printing on p.325 and p.327..
