Paris: De L'Imprimerie Imperiale. Good with no dust jacket. 1808. First Edition. Hardcover. xii/307 pages; Étienne Marc Quatremère was a French Orientalist. Born into a Jansenist family, Étienne and his mother, who knew Latin, had to go into hiding in the countryside when his father, a clothing merchant made a member of the French nobility by king Louis XV of France with the mention by the king to continue in his trading and shop keeping however, was executed in 1793 during the French Revolution. Later he studied Arabic under Silvestre de Sacy, (1758–1838) , a member of the French nobility since 1813 and the son of a public notary with Jewish roots, becoming later a rector at the University of Paris, in the School of Living Oriental Languages. Quatremère's first work was "Recherches ... Sur la langue et la littérature de l'Egypte" (1808) , showing that the language of ancient Egypt must be sought in Coptic. Width: 6.25" Height: 9". Bound in blue paper-covered boards. There are two faded paper labels affixed to the spine. The exterior displays moderate to significant soiling/darkening at the edges and along the spine. The front board is detaching. The pages exhibit light age toning, light scattered foxing in some margins, faint tide markings at the head of some pages, and moderate soiling along the edges of the text block. Bnotwithstandng the leaves are bright white and the printing is clear. Book dealer's label is affixed to the front pastedown. It should be noted that pages 1/2 and pages 15/16 appear twice in this volume--the first time bound in between the preface and the beginning of the text, and the second in their rightful places.
