About This Item

Oakland: Biobooks, 1950 One of 750 copies printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at The Plantin Press; reprinted from the Stockton edition of 1852. Foreword by Joseph A. Sullivan. x,113 pp. Wood engravings by Henry Shire. Large folding map, pictorial endpapers. Two-tone cloth lettered in gilt on spine. Spine ends show light rubbing, else a fine copy. The original edition is very rare, being the first book printed in the city of Stockton. It is one of the earliest to give both an account of the discovery of gold and conditions in the mines and provides one of the few early sketches of the San Joaquin Valley. Carson's description of the Tulare (San Joaquin) Valley is considered the best of the early predictions on this great district. The folding map is a reproduction of the rare 1850 Charles Gibbs "Map of the San Joaquin River," and shows the Southern mines in 1852..
