About This Item
New-Street Square, London: Spottiswoode & Co, 1865. First Edition. HB. Full green pebbled leather, gilt lettering with 5 raised bands on spine, gilt leaf on front cover, 134 pp., all edges of text block gilt. Account of fox hunting in early 19th century England, and more importantly an account of the social life of the gentry of that period, written by the favorite nephew of Jane Austin, the eldest son of her brother James. The Vine (Vyne) is a manorial estate in Sherborne St John, Hampshire, near the town of Steventon, where Jane Austin was raised. Her father, George Austen, was Rector of the local Anglican Parishes, and was often a guest at the Vine, and Jane Austen, along with her sister, attended social functions at the manor. The author knew Jane Austen well, and wrote a biography of her. This copy signed at top of half title page C. A. Leigh, and with the armorial bookplate of Cholmeley Austen Leigh, the son of the author, who was a partner in the Spottiswoode firm that published this book. No marks in book, binding tight. Covers show some edge wear, spine darkened. An uncommon association copy of a scarce title. Book condition VG.
