About This Item

Boston: Cummings, Hilliard, and Company, 1826 First edition. [2], 395pp. Original paper-covered boards, printed paper spine label. Early Essex Institute embossed circular stamp to title, some light flaking to paper at spine ends, very light foxing to first three leaves, but a fine, clean, and untrimmed copy in the original state. Housed in a custom clamshell box with leather spine label. One of the most significant accounts of early 19th century travel in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, and the first book by one of the more notable literary men of that period. The author traveled to New Orleans, Covington, Alexandria, Cape Girardeau, St. Charles, and New Madrid. He comments on virtually all aspects of life as he saw it in the region including commerce, slavery, morality, geography, agriculture, transportation, etc. He takes special note of the flurry of land speculation. Flint returned from his journey expecting to die due to a long and exhausting illness. Instead, he recovered and began his literary career. In 1831 he edited The Personal Narrative of James O. Pattie. The title offered here was his first major work, and was preceded by only few pamphlets. This title is rarely offered in such fine, original condition. [BAL: 6113. Graff: 1359. Clark II: 26. DAB VI: p.474; Howes I: F-204. Howes II: F-210; Rader: 1420; Sabin: 24794; Streeter Sale: 1540]..
