Richmond VA: Whittet and Shepperson, 1893. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 291 pages. Hardcover in brown cloth. The binding shows light rubbing and wear, but overall a clean and attractive copy. Patterned endpapers. Text is toned. John McElhenney (1781-1871) was a Presbyterian minister born in Waxhaws, South Carolina and went to Washington College in 1802. Thereafter he went to Princeton. After he became a preacher, he was sent to the Old Stone Church in Lewisburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) along the Greenbriar River. He delivered his first sermon there in 1808 and remained at the same church for over 60 years. This volume contains a chapter on his service during the Civil War and as West Virginia separated from Virginia.
