Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1882. A Near Fine Hardcover. Near Fine/No Dust Jacket As Issued.

Half pebbled leather with matching in color cloth; spine titles in gilt with black lined divisions. Marbled endpages with matching textblock. No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; Still Gift Quality. Text is clean with appropriate age-toning. 8vo; 9 inches tall; 111 pages of text followed by blank pages presumed to give the spine room for the titles. A very handsome rebinding. Graff records an edition prior to this in Chicago in 1882.. Compiled from official reports describing over 400 engagements in chronological order, including a lengthy description of the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

After the US Civil War Sheridan reported to the Gulf of Mexico, where his presence along the Texas border hastened the fall of Maximilian, the French puppet emperor in Mexico, in 1867.
He was later named military commander of Louisiana and Texas (1867), but his harsh administration of Reconstruction measures led to his removal soon thereafter by President Andrew Johnson.

He spent the remaining years until 1883 in Western command. He planned and conducted a successful Indian campaign (1868-69), after which he was promoted to lieutenant general. He became general-in-chief of the army in 1883 and five years later was commissioned as general of the army of the United States.
He spent his last month's writing his memoirs.

1854 HUGE MAP Colton's Western Tourist Emigrant's Guide Americana California

J.H. Colton founded an American mapmaking company in the early 1830s which became an international leader in the map publishing industry until 1890. Colton created railroad maps, immigrant guides, elaborate atlases, and more all printed using engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than maps made with less costly wax engravings, which were often separately hand water colored. and were recognized for their decorative borders.
J.H. Colton's 'Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide'is an important 19th-century geographical book with an enormous folding map of the American 'west' including Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Wisconsin. According to Howes, this work includes descriptions and material on California, Oregon, and Texas, with overland routes and westward expansion.

Edited (with notes) by Richard F. Burton. Housed in a custom enclosure. (Wagner-Camp 335:4; Cowan p.414; Graff 2677; Howes M279; Penzer p.69-70; Sabin 44515) First edition.
Randolph B. Marcy was a career soldier (he graduated from West Point in 1832) at a time when the career would be likely to involve exploration. In the 1840s, part of his role was the escorting of emigrant wagon trains through Oklahoma and Texas, and mapping their routes. In 1857, he was involved in the expedition against the Mormons in Utah, leading his men in a forced march through the Rocky Mountains in winter. In 1852, he was commander of an expedition to find the headwaters of the Red River. All this experience meant that he was the ideal author for a book on how to survive in the wilderness. In the last half of the eighteenth century, England and Europe were hungry for information concerning america. One of the books which had combinations of personal and borrowed observation and reflection. one of the best know is Lieutenant Thomas Anburey's Travels through the Interior Parts of America printed for William Lane in 1789. It was reckoned a valuable source on the Borgoyne campaign, in which the author served and on America, through which he traveled.
