The true first edition with no edition remarked and no introduction. Famous novel by Mary Cholmondeley following a period in the lives of two friends, Rachel and Hester. This was a scandalous work upon its publication due to its feature of adultery, satirised clergymen and the emancipation of women, and has since been republished several times.Written by Mary Cholmondeley, best known for this bestselling satire of religious hypocrisy and narrowness of country life.Complete with half title and thirty-two leaves of publisher's catalogue to rear dated October, 1899. With Subscribers announcement tipped in later to postscript. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with bumping and chipping to head and tail of spine, bumping to extremities of boards, with minor staining mark to rear board, evidence of the removal of a bookplate to front board, and light fading to spine. Internally, binding generally firm. Light handling mark to odd leaf, pages otherwise generally very clean. Good
