About This Item
Paris: Printed by Lachevardiere for Hector Bossange. 1827. First edition, first printing, preceding both the American and UK printings. First edition, first printing, preceding both the American and UK printings. Three volumes. Contemporary half red morocco over marbled paper boards, ruled and decorated in gilt to the spines. Speckled page edges. Green silk page marker to each volumes. Half titles and front blank to each volume. A very attractive set, the bindings square and firm with some rubbing to the spine tips and board extremities. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions. The very scarce true first edition of Cooper's adventure of the sea, published in London three days after this Paris printing and not until early January the following year in America. With the characters of Scipio Africanus and Cassandra, the novel presents some of the first serious depictions of characters of African lineage in American literature. Adaptations for the stage in both the United States and England followed shortly after publication. From the library of Martin Stone.
