Edward Stephens (d. 1706) was a prolific and politically astute pamphleteer who had wholeheartedly supported the Revolution of 1688. Quickly disenchanted, he published this pamphlet critical of William III's government, taking as his text Proverbs 27:5-6: "Open Rebuke is better than secret Love: Faithfull are the Wounds of a Friend; but the Kisses of an enemy are deceitfull". He criticises division in the King's Council, leading to failure in Ireland; the fact that James II's advisors had gone unpunished; and the machinations of those seeking preferment in the Church.
