About This Item

Sofia : The Bulgarian Red Cross / Bulgarian Red Cross Society, 1924 - 1925. Very good. Two publications, related to the Bulgarian Red Cross, 1924 - 1925. - The Bulgarian Red Cross "The Refugee Question in Bulgaria." Sofia, 1925. First edition; 11 1/4 x 8; pp. 3-32; light-brown wraps, ruled and printed in black, decorated with a large red cross; illustrated with numerous photographs and tables; a small nick to upper corner of front wrap and light creasing along spine; a few mild spots of foxing to margins; overall in very good condition. With the signature of David Starr Jordan - arguably the most influential of all American ichthyologists, former President of Indiana University, and the founding President of Stanford University - to front wrap. A comprehensive report on the economy of Bulgaria before and after the Balkan wars and WWI, public health, distribution and conditions among refugees, government help for them, etc. OCLC lists 4 copies in US institutions (as of December 2020), one copy in the trade. - Bulgarian Red Cross Society "Executive Committee for Refugee Relief No. 40." Sofia, 1924. First edition; 11 x 7 3/4; pp. [2]; off-white stock, printed in black and illustrated with a red cross; light creasing and wear to edges; in very good or better condition. Speaking to the Presidents of the Red Cross Societies, the Presidents of the Junior Red Cross Societies in the schools, and the Mayors of All the Villlages and Cities in the Kingdom of Bulgaria, the circular addressed the territorial changes in Bulgaria after the Second Balkan War, which had negated the majority of the gains after the First Balkan War and which, in turn, had resulted in more than 100 000 Bulgarian refugees from Eastern Thrace, Macedonia, etc. It explained the overwhelming and crippling effect of such influx of people to the already-battered country and its innability to offer help to its own people. It finally implored communities and societies to lend a helping hand in handling the dire situation. No copies in OCLC; none in the trade (as of December 2020).
