About This Item

(London: Collins, 1973) 0001922904. 8vo; original purple boards, lettered in gilt on spine; price-clipped laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 144, incl. index; liberally illustrated with contemporary artwork, some of which in colour. Dustwrapper slightly rubbed with trace of edgewear, and sunned on spine panel; bump to top fore-corner of lower board; edges, endpapers and outermost leaves a bit foxed. Good to very good condition. 'Joanna Richardson believes that the Prince Regent - George IV - was the most gifted ruler of England since Charles I. Certainly, no king since Charles I had been so interested in the arts. George IV showed a width and diversity of patronage, in music, painting and sculpture, the theatre and literature, medicine and science, which no English monarch has equalled. Most important, "he gave a heartwarming impetus to the art of living". And that art is best seen during the period of his Regency, 1811 - 1820.' .
