About This Item

[Madrid]: [Domingo Garcia Morras], 1655. [13], 204, 211-216, 205-210, 217-220ff, [18]. Partially misbound. With an engraved pictorial title page and two further engraved plates by Pedro de Villafranca Malagón. Later vellum, title in manuscript to spine. Extremities rubbed, marked, and discoloured. Chipping to head of title page, small neat paper repair to verso, very occasional manuscript annotations in an early Spanish hand. The first edition of Francisco Ruiz de Vergara Álava's survey of Spanish orders of knighthood and chivalry. The exceptionally baroque allegorical title page, representing the Apostle Saint James hewing down Saracens, and the two plates (depicting Philip IV and the immaculate conception respectively) are the work of Pedro de Villafranca Malagón (c. 1615-1684), Madrid-based painter and printmaker and sometime engraver-in-ordinary to Philip IV. Such was the impact of the title page illustration, it was repurposed in 1719 for Aguado de Cordova's Bullarium equestris ordinis. . First edition. Folio.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
