[ii], 121, [3], 20, [2], 197, [2], [13 blanks] pp. Contemporary sprinkled calf, with 4 raised bands & 5 delicately gilt-decorated compartments to spine, titled in gilt & double-ruled on black spine label, beautifully tooled in gilt along cover edges, with beautiful brass clasps; charming double comb marbled endpapers. Printed with drop capitals & text ornaments; text in French. The Rule of St. Augustine, the oldest monastic rule in the Western Church, adopted by the Ursulines, the first teaching order of women established in 1535 by St. Angela de Merici. This edition of the Rule of St. Augustine includes Constitutions for the Ursuline Congregation of Bordeaux, one of the largest & most influential, founded in 1606 at the request of Archbishop de Sourdis of Bordeaux & approved by Pope Paul V in 1618. Rare. OCLC records three library holdings worldwide. A remarkable piece preserved in period binding.
