Folio. 191pp., illustrated with magnificent illustrations by Dore whose marvelous depictions of the squalid metropolis and showing an underside described in part by Dickens and written both by Octavia Hill and General Booth were here made bold by the large size engravings with details that later reprints unfortunately had to reduce ending the boldness of his pen, rebacked and re-cornered in brown leather over original maroon cloth, raised bands with lettering gilt, marbled endpapers and all edges marbled, occasional scattered foxing but mostly clean. A striking production of Wagner's dramatic poem of fantasy brilliantly illustrated by Pogany, bound in gray pictorial cloth accented in blue, black and gilt, spine gilt, some general finger soiling and rubbing. A very nice copy of this spectacular work.

Its publication came at a time when Japan was experiencing a dramatic shift from the conservative, isolationist policies of the sh gun-dominated Edo period to the rapid and widespread drive to modernise and engage with the rest of the world that characterizes the Meiji Restoration. This booklet focuses on a traditional domestic interior and features a beautiful double-page plate showing the layout and arrangement of a Japanese period home, showing respective zones for food preparation, cooking and the entertainment of guests. Items specifically illustrated and described include lacquer wares, a charcoal-burning stove, lanterns, wooden buckets and items used in the tea ceremony.
