Solid hardcover.; Facsimile reprint of 1631 edition, London: Printed by B Alsop and T Favvcet for B Fisher. STC 194. "The attorney Thomas Powell’s Direction for the Search of Records Remaining in the Chancerie (1622) was also motivated by the growing number and complexity of legal suits, which ‘for want of their proper records’ led to great expense and protraction. Powell’s work relied on the substantive and authoritative cataloguing undertaken by Arthur Agard (1540–1615). Agard, who trained in common law, served as Deputy Chamberlain of the Exchequer for more than forty years, and as such became the keeper of the records of the four treasuries; he was also an active member of the Elizabethan Society of Antiquaries. Agard produced a number of inventories of the holdings in his charge during his time in office, including the Abbreviatio Placetorium (a catalogue of the plea rolls) and most notably an impressive manuscript catalogue of the Exchequer holdings, the Compendium of records, completed after decades of work in about 1610. The Compendium was prepared for publication after Agard’s death by Thomas Powell, and published as the Repertorie of Records in 1631." - Kate Peters, ‘Friction in the Archives’: Access and the Politics of Record-Keeping in Revolutionary England; in Kate Peters, Alexandra Walsham, and Liesbeth Corens; Archives and Information in the Early Modern World; page 160.
