About This Item

1857 Jefferson Davis West Point Heavy Cannon Report American Army Illustrated

"I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came."

– Jefferson Davis

A rare first edition printing of report number 6 from papers on practical engineering addressed to Jefferson Davis written by Joseph Totten, Brevet Brigadier General and colonel and chief Engineer of the US army. Totten rans experiments of missile and cannon fire from 1852 to 1855 at West Point. Totten experimented to understand effects of firing different materials, different casings, different quantities, different targets, containing or erasing smoke from firings, trajectory influencers on missiles, and more. Totten's report includes detailed graphs and illustrations on the construction, execution, and results of each experiment.
