About This Item

New York : Harper & Brothers, 1952. Book. Illus. by Charles Locke, Illustrator. Near Fine. Hardcover. Stated First Edition. Stated "First Edition" with code F-B on copyright page, in unclipped original dust jacket. Clean blue paper-covered boards with ivory cloth spine, dark blue lettering on spine. No bumping or wear. Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound. Pages are clean with clean endpapers - no names, writing or marks. Illustrated by Charles Locke. 95 pages. Dust jacket is quite clean, not price clipped (2.50 on front inside flap), no chips, some clear invisible tape reinforcement along rear panel lower edge and upper spine edge, a few tiny closed edge tears; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. Two stories which provide a remarkably full statement of Mark Twain's views on the religious doctrine of his time, one published here for the first time ("Captain Stormfield's Vsit to Heaven"), and the second one ("Letter from the Recording Angel") a hilarious and savage satire which appeared here for the first time in book form..

Reviews

On Jan 8 2013, DJO said:
The introduction is very interesting, and necessary to fully enjoy the main story. The added on "part two - Letter of the Recording Angel" is only 4 pages long, but is in my opinion much more fun to read than the main body of the book. I was waylaying my roommates, calling my parents, and otherwise buttonholing everyone within arm's reach in order to share this treasure.
