An interesting report containing detailed information concerning the cost and difficulty of obtaining steamboat transport up the Missouri River. Includes reports from Quartermaster Thomas S. Jesup's report, as well as those of Asssistant Quartermasters J. H. Ballard and James McGunnigle.

Lightly tanned and foxed. Very Good. Calhoun served as Secretary of War under President Monroe for nearly seven years, beginning in 1817. Congress, worried by the Panic of 1819, disapproved his proposed budget to enhance coastal and frontier fortifications and military roads. Calhoun's rival in the Cabinet, Treasury Secretary William Crawford of Georgia, led the attack. Criticisms of Calhoun increased when reports issued that his favorite project, a military outpost on the Yellowstone River, was running way over budget; rumors suggesting that Calhoun and his associates had personally profited from certain projects soon proliferated.
