An informal account of the Emersonian-tradition in American culture-the 'green American tradition', to use Paul Rosenfeld's phrase. In his account, Sherman Paul begins with Emerson and the ideas he expressed in his essay, "The American Scholar'. He uses Henry David Thoreau, John Jay Chapman, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rosenfeld, Van Wyck Brooks, Randolph Bourne, William Carlos Williams, Gary Snyder, and Alfred Kazin as touchstones in his search for a usable American past. Each essay is accompanied by an autobiographical note that places it in the context of personal and pubic happenings at the time the work was being written. 8vo. 294 pages. 1976, Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge, LA
