Boston: Mrs. Waldron P. Belknap, (1955). 89pp. + [2] additional leaves stapled within. 4to. Stiff paper covers; plastic comb binding. Printed on rectos only, the text comprising facsimiles of handwritten and typed notes. Minor handling; very good.
Compilation of research notes on early American portraiture. The work is divided into 16 sections covering New York, New England, Virginia and Washington portraits; early painters (limners); notes on English mezzotints and their influence on colonial American painting; Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and New England painters; "Newburyport Research," etc. The author was an independent researcher interested in colonial portraiture until his untimely death. These notes were published posthumously by his mother who carried on with his research.
