London: Smith, Elder, 1839. Two volumes, publisher's dark green cloth, blocked in blind and gilt. Volume 1: 455 pp., 13 lithograph plates. Volume 2, 480 pp., 11 lithograph plates. Plates foxed, otherwise a near-fine copy. With the bookplate of George Brinley, (not the American collector) and an inscription to Edward H. Brinley, M.D. from his father, dated 1853. Edward Brinley graduated Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, in 1853. He later was on the faculty at Trinity College, Hartford. The brother of the great chemist Sir Humphrey Davy, whosen works he'd edited, in nine volumes, John Davy's researches here include the torpedo, poisonous snakes of Ceylon, the temperature of the insane, and many other topics.
