About This Item
First Edition.
v, 344 p., with laid in note card. Vintage blue cloth hardcover with gilt lettering to spine exhibits some very minor edgewear and slight bump to corner, but is otherwise Fine, clean and well-bound with a laid in notecard dated 1935. Dust jacket has some edgewear, including small tears but is otherwise Very Good and has been housed in a removable protective sleeve to prevent further wear. Please see images.
From the jacket flap:
'Rest and be Thankful', reads the legend on a white stone that stands at the summit of the pass leading over Glen Croe from Loch Long to Loch Fyne in the County of Argyll. Set there by the regiment that repaired the road more than a hundred years ago, the stone marks the frontier between the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland; and the legend on it testifies at once to the ardour of the ascent and the satisfaction of journey's end achieved. The symbolism fits this collection of Mr. Blake's essays perfectly. For nearly fifteen years now he has delighted a host of readers in Scotland, and many outside it, with his papers over the signature of 'Vagabond', and of these this is a selection of the best—records of travel, wayfaring adventure, odd encounters and, generally, 'things seen' while roving in Scotland, England and on the Continent. The collection, however, has a homogeneity unusual in a book of reprinted pieces. Mr. Blake has been consistent in his themes and his moods; the title perfectly suggests the quality of the work, its parts fused by the warmth of emotion recollected in tranquillity [sic].
