Front page illustrated article on the noted Scottish missionary to China, who began his service with the English Presbyterian Mission in 1847 in Hong Kong. Burns (1815 - 1868) traveled widely with James Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, and both worked in the remote interior of the country, with Burns remaining in China for 20 years. Front page article with 5 captioned woodblock illustrations which include: a portrait of Burns; "A Chinaman putting his god into a pot of boiling water"; "A Chinese convert attacked by a band of ruffians"; "A Chinese Christian going to Chapel with his family"; and "A missionary driven into burning ruins by a mob". Large 4to, 9 3/4 x 13". Single disbound issue, Number 49, pp 309 -322. Article on Burns measures 57 column inches. Slight crease lower corner.
