About This Item
Chicago: Daily Democrat Steam Press Print, 1856.. 32pp. Modern boards, printed paper label. Titlepage reinserted, some minor dampstaining in foremargin of some leaves. Good. A rare Chicago ante-fire imprint. This work is critical of Blackwell's A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON THE POWER TO SELL LAND FOR THE NON-PAYMENT OF TAXES ASSESSED THEREON (1855): "...it can never be received as authority, in this state at least, until it shall have been entirely remodeled; and until the author shall have changed his present attitude of hostility to the Supreme Court of Illinois." It is usually ascribed to Charles B. Waite, a Chicago lawyer of the time, and this copy bears his name, written in a contemporary hand, on the titlepage. Not listed in OCLC, in CHICAGO ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS, or in Cohen. The only located copy resides in the Library of Congress, according to a note on the front endsheet in the hand of Chicago bookseller Wright Howes. BYRD 2528.
