At the beginning of the text there are two pages showing the family trees of the Kings of England and the kings of France and bibliography. At the beginning of each chapter is a small black-and-white illustration. Burgundy coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. At the beginning of each chapter is a small black-and-white illustration. The year is 1171  Thomas a Becket has been murdered, and the whole of Christendom is holding King Henry II at fault; and, Henry Plantagenet's wife and sons are actively plotting his downfall. Minor softening of the backstrip edges along with some rubbing; a little bumping of the book corners and the lower corner of the front panel has the underlying board visible. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. The hinge has cracked between the half title page and title page and between pages 200 and 201. Some creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with chipping to the top dustwrapper corners. Sunning of the backstrip and rear panel with very noticeable son to the top edge of the rear panel. Remnants of removal of stickers can be seen to the front panel and rear panel. This is the first UK edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 330, [ 6 -of which to further titles from author] pages,.
