Elm Tree Books, London, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. acknowledgements and three appendices. Dark brown coloured endpapers. The text is illustrated with copious sepia toned photographs from the late 19th century up to the late 1920s. Brown coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Photographic dustwrapper with gold and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Black and white photograph of author to the rear fold over panel. The author happened upon a collection of both Victorian and Edwardian negatives (several hundred of them) in a junk-stall in Yorkshire. The photographs were of one family, and, they give magical "... glimpses of badminton, picnics, Japanese teas, fancy dress pageants and leisured summer days, provide a fascinating record of the leisured life of one family for over forty years from the year of Queen Victoria's Jubilee." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. The author's detective work found out through the family were, discovering that they were a self-made people blossomed to real prosperity in the Edwardian times only to lose it all in the depression. Rubbing of the book corners and back strip corners. Age toning of the text block edges with some foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and some creasing of the edges. Noticeable foxing to the fold over creases and there is the remains of a sticker to be seen to the lower edge of the front fold over panel. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. [5], 6 - 190, [2] pages,.
