A fascinating single volume work on the history of Richmond, examining the capital city's past from the Colonial Period to the war between the states, and the following reconstruction. This text was written by the wife of the eminent Virginian archivist, William G. Standard, who also served as the secretary of the 'Virginia Historical Society', and the editor of its magazine. Whilst frequently collaborating with her husband on a variety of works, Mary Newton Stanard was also a respected historical writer in her own right, and published several works on the City of Richmond and the Colony of Virginia. Written using a variety of sources, including histories, biographies, public records, diaries, files of newspapers and periodicals. Copiously illustrated throughout, with eighty three illustrations. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally very smart. Very slightly rubbed to extremities. Very slightly bumped to head and tail of spines. Sluight marking to boards and spine. Slight fading to spine. Front hinge strained between front endpaper and half title page, slightly showing cords to rear of gutter but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout, slightly age toned to edges. The occasional page uncut to the lower extremity. Very Good Indeed
