About This Item

London and New York: William Heinemann Ltd, Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1931 A good copy in the original cloth binding with 50 tipped-in illustrations and numerous line drawings by Arthur Rackham. This edition was first published in 1905, so this is a later reprint but still with plates tipped in. The binding is sound and tight but with some lighter spotting to the bottom of the front board and back board. There is a little wear to corners and both bottom corners are bumped. Page edges and endpapers are green - the endpapers have a little fading and there is a faint ink signature on the fep. The half title page also has an ownership signature. Contents with frontispiece, title page, introduction, listing of illustrations, text (62 pages including postscript) , and 49 further plates on thick green backing paper at the rear. The text pages have occasional light spotting. Plates are in very good clean condition - backing pages have some light fading to top edges.

Synopsis

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow first appeared in a story collection by Irving called  The Sketch-Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This first classic collection of American short stories also featured the popular Rip Van Winkle . The fantastical portions of Irving's works were inspired not only by his travels around Europe and hearing old folk tales and mythology, but also by a visit to upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains as a youth. His exposure to the old Dutch customs and ghost stories around Tarrytown, New York planted the seeds for his Headless Horseman character.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
