About This Item
Four Seasons Foundation, San Francisco, 1965. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. A significant association copy, inscribed on the gray front free endpaper: "For Don Allen, comrade! Gary Snyder." Donald Allen founded the Four Seasons Foundation press, which produced this volume and other works by Snyder and the Beats. He then started Grey Fox Press which did the same. He's also known for editing the influential New American Poetry anthology which helped announce and establish the Beats. One of the foremost champions and facilitators of the Beat movement. Snyder dedicated his later book *Left Out in the Rain* to Don Allen and James Laughlin. Published as "Writing 7" in the Four Seasons series, this is the first issue of this booklet, without the price on rear or date on title page. It collects *Riprap,* published by Origin Press in 1959, as well as Snyder's Cold Mountain translations, which had only appeared previously in the *Evergreen Review.* Brown textured wraps, staple bound, gray endpapers. In fine, as new condition, crisp and clean. We invite you to explore our growing collection of signed and inscribed Gary Snyder items. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
