Boston, MA: Ticknor and Company, January 1885. First Edition. Cloth . Very Good/No Jacket As Issued. 5' x 7 & 1/2'; Prior its publication by Ticknor Howell's realist masterpiece was serialized by The Century Magazine in 1984. In book format this is the first edition (1985) in blue cloth with gold & black lettering & decorations on spine and front panel. Darkened spine. Mild user wear, especially at edges. Dust staining of textblock edges. Grey end pages. Non-authorial insciption pencilled FFEP. Sound binding. (515 pages.) Housed in slip-case well made and designed for this book at some time after publication. The case has two separate pieces.The interior piece is folding tan cloth covered stiff, white cardstock. This piece covers the front, back, spine and fore-edge. There an attached folded dark green ribbon that serves as a simple method for sliding the interior segment from the exterior part of the case. The exterior case looks much like an ordinary slipcase, though it is designed to mimic the look of a quarter bound book. With a scarlet leather spine with black stamped lettering and floral design and five ribs. Lettering has title, author and publication date. The rest of the exterior case is red and green printed patterned paper covering heavy cardstock.
