About This Item

Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy: Lignano per la Cultura. Near Fine. 2006. First Edition. Softcover. [very slight bump to bottom right corner, otherwise nice and clean, virtually as new]. (B&W photographs) A retrospective look at the on-location production of A FAREWELL TO ARMS, the 1957 David O. Selznick production that was the second film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel. The text is entirely in Italian, so I'm somewhat guessing at the content, but the book appears to be a kind of companion piece to a TV documentary produced by La Cineteca del Friuli, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the film's production. It's divided into two main sections: the first, written by Carlo Gaberscek, is entitled "Hemingway e il Friuli," and appears to be a history of the conception and writing of the novel and its subsequent transmutation into the film, with quite a bit of attention paid to Hemingway himself and his personal connection to the Friuli region of Italy; appended to this are notes and a bibliography. The second part of the book is a photographic portfolio, consisting primarily of scene stills from the movie (many featuring the stars, Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones), with a few off-camera shots thrown in for variety. A nicely-produced little book. .
