Anna Louise Strong (1885 1970) was an American journalist and activist, best known for her reporting on and support for communist movements in the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. In 1921 she first went to Russia as the correspondent of the American Friends Relief Mission. She also founded and was managing editor of the only English-language newspaper in Russia. This book recounts her trip on horseback ca. 1929 to the High Pamirs, that desolate Central Asian plateau which is called "The Roof of the World". "The Road to the Grey Pamir" was her fourth travelogue / reportage on Soviet subjects which had begun to be published in 1924, after several works of fiction, religious tracts, and on social work subjects all written prior to 1915 and before her conversion to communism.
