About This Item

This copy of Robinson Jeffers at Occidental College was published by Occidental College in 1955 as A check list of the Jeffers collection in the Mary Norton Clapp Library published on the fiftieth anniversary of his graduation. The booklet, which measures approximately 6 x 7.5 inches, contains 23 pages dedicated to Jeffers' works. In addition to the booklet's printed words, this offering includes the bookplate of Rosaliea Brooker, a former owner, an inscription reading "Rosalie A. Brooker from Bepy McCloy June 1955 (Bepy McCloy is apparently the nickname of Elizabeth J. McCloy, Librarian at Occidental College), and a separate 4-page 4 x 5 inch invitation to a Special Recognition Service in Honor of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Graduation from Occidental College of Robinson Jeffers.

The booklet, which was printed in Los Angeles by The Ward Ritchie Press, is bound in a stiff paper cover. The overall condition of all the items being offered is fine.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the front cover, a 2-page spread showing the bookplate and inscription, the front page of the invitation to the Special Recognition Service, a 2-page spread showing the title page, and a typical 2-page spread of listings of Jeffers' works.

John Robinson Jeffers (January 10, 1887 – January 20, 1962) was an American poet known for his work about the central California coast. Much of Jeffers' poetry was written in narrative and epic form. However, he is also known for his shorter verse and is considered an icon of the environmental movement. Influential and highly regarded in some circles, despite or because of his philosophy of "inhumanism", Jeffers believed that transcending conflict required human concerns to be de-emphasized in favor of the boundless whole. This led him to oppose U.S. participation in World War II, a stance that was controversial after the U.S. entered the war. [Wikipedia]
