About This Item

Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1981. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. First Printing - First Thus. 12mo. 138 pp. Actually the first Oxford Softcover edition - trade paperback format. Edge and corner wear with faint creasing on the spine; store stamped by the Foreign Book Store in Seoul, Korea, on the inside of the back cover. Not only was this Cyril Connolly's first novel, it was his only novel. The book was published in Paris before World War II after being rejected by two London publishers on grounds of obscenity. Desmond MacCarthy said, "I have read it twice, and I shall read it again, remembering it between whiles as a theme admirably and seriously handled, and as a novel written with a peremptory, witty precision, and a spirited off-hand elegance extremely pleasing.".
