About This Item

Canberra: Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies (AIAS), 1986. Paperback small quarto, very good condition, black & cream text-photos, colour photos, spine little faded, minor edgewear. 102 pp. This book details the recent history of the Anbarra people, Arnhem Land. The songs, dances, and artifacts that are part of Rom are described and accompanied by colour illustrations. The first Rom ceremony to be performed outside Arnhem Land was held at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies in Canberra in November 1982. An exhibition of bark paintings and craft work was also brought to Canberra, and now has been purchased by the National Museum of Australia. All of the paintings reproduced here are closely related to the themes of the Rom ritual performed in Canberra. This book is a catalogue of this exhibition in addition to the ethnographic and historical material on the Anbarra people, their country and the ritual of Rom. (No 59 in this series.).
