Philadelphia: John C. Winston Co. Undated, but circa 1905. A very nice set. Complete in two volumes with the original stiff cloth dust jackets. A novel of the Italian Renaissance, set in Florence in the late 15th century. Illustrated by 60 fine photogravure plates with captioned tissue guards. 475 and 478 pp. 8vo hardcovers. Cream and red cloth with gilt lettering, decoration, and armorial devices. Gilt top page edges. Red ribbon page markers. Bright red cloth dust jackets with "Florentine Edition" on the spines. Near Fine. Both volumes clean, unworn, and securely bound. Printed on quality paper that remains crisp and bright. Text and illustrations are very clean. No owner signatures, bookplates, or other marks. Jackets are intact and unfaded with minor soil and signs of age.

Synopsis

Romola (1862–63) is a historical novel by George Eliot set in the fifteenth century, and is "a deep study of life in the city of Florence from an intellectual, artistic, religious, and social point of view". It first appeared in fourteen parts published in Cornhill Magazine from July 1862 (vol. 6, no. 31) to August 1863 (vol. 8, no. 44).
