Hurst's Arlington Edition. 12mo,brown cloth boards decoratively stamped and imprinted in black on the cover and spine, 446 pp + ads. Please see scans. About very good. Some soil, previous owner's name stamped on front pastedown and last page; pages, as always with older Hurst volumes, quite tanned but not fragmenting. Binding is rather stout, with no sign of the common weakness or hinge cracking. A nice decorative binding (see scans) and early reprint of the historical novel of Florentine life by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans). L-37n
Synopsis
Romola (1862–63) is a historical novel by George Eliot set in the fifteenth century, and is "a deep study of life in the city of Florence from an intellectual, artistic, religious, and social point of view". It first appeared in fourteen parts published in Cornhill Magazine from July 1862 (vol. 6, no. 31) to August 1863 (vol. 8, no. 44).
