Poetry, comprising the first and fifth translator's versions. Born in Naishapur in Khorassan during the late 11th century. He was called Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim Al-Khayyami. He followed his father's tentmaker trade, and went on to science, mathematics, astromomy. The Persian Sultan Malik-Shah drastically reformed the calendar based on Omar's studies. In intervals, he wrote poetry. By his death in 1123, he had composed some 500 epigrams in quatrains, or rubais "peculiar in rhyme and pungent in effect", from Untermeyer's Introduction. For 6 centuries, this poetry was unknown to the Western world, until studied and translated by Edward FitzGerald, b. 1809.
